Gravenstein Brickyard

Duke Ernst Günther, the owner of Grassten Castle, was the first owner of Grasten Teglværk (brickyard) back in 1903.

After World War One and the Reunion, back in 1920, both brickyard and castle were taken over by the state.

In 1922 the brickyard was bought by Johan Heinrich Clausen, who also at the time owned Hillerød Teglværk. His son Erik Clausen took over the factory in 1931 and after his death in 1959 his wife Elisabeth Omogen Clausen became director of the brickyard.

In 1962 the business became a Limited company with Peter Hansen, his family and other local brickyard owners as shareholders.

From 1982 to 1984 the factory stopped production due to the bad market conditions.

In 1988 Carl Matzen took over the factory and to this day it is run by his son Peter Matzen.
